Egyptian Society for Road Safety Introduction
Egyptian Society was established after the tragic death of Deana Blanchard. At 17 years of age, she had her whole life ahead of her; but this was all taken away when she was hit and killed by a speeding bus on the Maadi Corniche. Nobody, especially a parent should have to suffer the loss of a child or loved ones to such an unnecessary and horrific accident http://www.who.int/features/2007/faces/deana/en/index.html Egyptian Society is a registered and established NGO, which was formed by a group of local citizens and business members who are extremely concerned about the staggering number of fatalities and injuries related to road accidents. Our Vision & Mission Egyptian Society is dedicated to making the roads in Egypt safer for it's citizens by initiating educational programs and campaigns which increase driver and pedestrian awareness of safe road practices; supporting public and private sector-led initiatives which will improve road and traffic conditions; sponsoring local symposia and workshops to address road safety and traffic management issues and solutions; and actively contributing to an exchange of information about best global road safety practices by collaborating with international experts and participating in global forums. Road Safety Statistics At the inquest into the world’s first road traffic death in 1896, the coroner was reported to have said “this must never happen again”. More than a century later, over 6,000 people are killed on Egypt’s roads every year and up to 28,000 more are injured. WHO predicts that global road traffic fatalities will increase by 67% by the year 2020. These casualties of the road will continue to increase if planned and immediate action is not taken. Accident specialists maintain that more than 50% of victims are in their mid twenties, and that one fifth of children between one and five years old who die in hospitals are road accident victims. Financial losses caused by traffic accidents are estimated at around LE1 billion a year and include damaged vehicles, health care, hospital fees and lost working hours. Road deaths and injuries do not discriminate. Losing a friend or family member can happen to anyone at any time regardless of age, profession or nationality |
